Ao longo dos últimos anos foram realizados diversos estudos sobre infeção por hemoplasmas
em felinos domésticos com o objetivo de determinar a prevalência de infeção, fatores de risco
associados e qual o seu significado na saúde dos felinos. Estão descritos cinco agentes capazes de
infetar os gatos domésticos – Mycoplasma haemofelis, “Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum”,
“Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis”, “Candidatus Mycoplasma hematoparvum” e Mycoplasma
haemocanis. Apesar de a infeção por hemoplasmas em gatos estar descrita a nível global, que
tenhamos conhecimento tal informação não está disponível em gatos de Angola.
O presente estudo teve como objetivo principal determinar, através do método de Reação em
Cadeia da Polimerase (PCR) convencional e Sequenciação Genética, a prevalência de infeção por
hemoplasmas em gatos de Luanda, Angola. Este estudo pretendeu ainda identificar fatores de risco
para a infeção por hemoplasmas em gatos de Angola.
Foram analisadas amostras de 67 gatos domésticos. Foi detetado Mycoplasma spp.,
nomeadamente “Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum” em quatro amostras (6%). O número
reduzido de animais infetados não tornou possível a identificação de fatores de risco associados à
infeção.
Embora a prevalência identificada seja relativamente baixa, quando comparada com estudos
de prevalência realizados noutras áreas geográficas, a interpretação deve ser cuidada na medida em
que a amostra estudada apresenta características que, à partida, lhe conferem menor risco de
exposição aos agentes em estudo. Ainda assim, o presente estudo descreve, pela primeira vez, a
infeção por micoplasmas hemotrópicos em gatos de Angola.
During the last years, several studies on feline infection with hemoplasmas have been performed, aiming to determine the prevalence of infection, associated risk factors and their significance in feline health. Five agents have been described as capable of infecting domestic cats - Mycoplasma haemofelis, “Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum”, “Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis”, “Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum” and Mycoplasma haemocanis. Although hemoplasma infection in cats was described globally, to our best knowledge that information is not available in cats from Angola. The present study aimed to determine through conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Genetic Sequencing, the prevalence of hemoplasma infection in cats from Luanda, Angola. This study also aimed to identify risk factors for hemoplasma infection in cats from Angola. Samples from 67 domestic cats were analyzed in this study. Mycoplasma spp., specifically “Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum”, was detected in four samples (6%). The reduced number of infected animals detected in the present study prevented to identification of risk factors associated with the infection.
