International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II) e registou-se o Índice
Objectives: To describe the prevalence and severity of dental caries among young population from a public school of Henriques Nogueira, Torres Vedras, to relate the prevalence and severity of dental caries with sociodemographic variables and the frequency of consumption among group of food with cariogenicity and retentive potential. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of 50 students (2nd and 3rd cycle), selected randomly from a public school in the Municipality of Torres Vedras. The prevalence of dental caries was evaluated with DMFT index (Decayed, Missed, and Filled), the severity was measured with ICDAS II and the modified Lőe and Silness Plate Index was recorded. For the intra oral observation was applied a disposable mirror, probe, tweezers and periodontal probe. The consent form and a questionnaire was given to the parents previously. The questionnaire is structured in two parts: first confined the study of sociodemographic variables (gender, age, educational level) and the second confined the study of food frequency (consumption of sugar). The data was submitted to a descriptive and statistical analysis by SPSS Software Statistics v.24. Results: The age of our sample range between 11 and 17 years, 78% of our sample is attending the 3rd cycle. The prevalence of dental caries was 58%, which the DMFT index was 1.64 ± 2.05 and 28% of the lesions was found as incipient lesions. There’s an association between the prevalence of dental caries and educational level (p <0.001), but there was no significant correlation between the prevalence of caries and the food frequency (p>0.05).There is an association between the prevalence of caries and educational level. Conclusions: The prevalence and severity of dental caries are low in this population. There is an association between caries prevalence and educational level.
