This report describes a curricular internship in field veterinary nursing carried out in the Lower Alentejo region, on livestock farms located in the municipalities of Aljustrel, Ourique, Castro Verde, and Odemira. The internship lasted 12 weeks, corresponding to 78 days and approximately 702 hours of practical training. Its main objective was to consolidate and apply theoretical and practical knowledge in veterinary nursing, with particular emphasis on animal health, preventive medicine, and the control of infectious diseases in ruminants. Throughout the internship, animal health surveillance, identification, and traceability procedures were performed on approximately 9,869 ruminants, while vaccination and deworming activities involved around 10,763 ruminants, including 2,356 lambs vaccinated against the BTV-3, BTV-4, and BTV-8 serotypes of Bluetongue disease. The internship also included participation in premovement testing of 5,340 sheep intended for export to Israel and approximately 350 cattle from different farms, including sample collection for livestock exhibitions. In addition, 12 emergency cases, 8 parturitions, 1 fetotomy converted into a caesarean section, and 5 necropsies were monitored. Vaccination and electronic identification procedures in dogs, as well as the application of 150 intravaginal sponges in sheep, were also performed. Alongside the practical activities, an epidemiological analysis of Bluetongue disease in Europe was conducted, highlighting the co-circulation of multiple serotypes, the geographical expansion of Culicoides vectors, the influence of climate change on disease dynamics, and the limitations associated with serotype-specific immunity. It is concluded that the internship provided significant technical, scientific, and professional development, reinforcing the importance of epidemiological surveillance, preventive veterinary medicine, and sanitary control measures in ensuring the sustainability and health of livestock production systems.
