Abstract(s)
Ageing is a reality in most countries in the world, with particular focus on the so-called developed countries. The increase in the weight of the older population in the total population brings challenges, not only at demographic level, but also at social level, particularly with regard to ensuring that people who live more and more years have a role in society and a life with dignity and quality. The ageing process is associated with losses of different natures, of which the loss of social ties (quantity and quality of social relationships) stands out, increasing the risk of social isolation and loneliness. And although these phenomena are common to the entire population, their impact on older people is particularly worrying. Thus, based on a gerontological diagnosis, carried out within the second phase of Porto.Importa-Se project, in which 235 people aged 70 and over living alone and aged 75 and over living in a couple with no other elements were surveyed between 2020 and 2021, and having found that around 50% are at risk of isolation and loneliness, an intervention proposal is presented to counteract these situations and give older people the possibility of growing old with quality and dignity. The "Activ'IDADE" project aims, precisely, to respond to the needs identified in the surveyed population and is based on the premise that age should not be considered an obstacle to personal fulfilment and the construction of projects.
