Abstract(s)
The present study analyses the effects of environmental and management factors on the reproductive efficiency of the Portuguese Preta cattle breed. The data was collected from three straight purebred farms and spans from 01-01-2010 to 26-04-2015. It includes 934 calving intervals (IntP) from 361 females. The data was analysed using SAS with the goal of determining the impact of environmental factors namely farm; calving year; calving season; calf sex; age at calving (IdP) and age at first calving (Id1P). The IdP has a quadratic and linear effect: younger and older females tend to have a larger IntP than middle age females. Id1P has a linear effect, very young females at the first calving tend to have shorter IntP than older females. Environmental and management factors also had impact the IntP. The calf sex also affects the IntP, which tend to be larger in females that give birth to male calves. These results allow a better understanding of the impact that the management and environmental factors can have in the IntP variability as well as of the impact that Id1P and IdP can have in the reproductive efficiency of straight-bred Preta females.
