Abstract(s)
Tobacco, besides being known to be responsible for several pathologies, is a risk factor that plays a decisive role in the development of periodontitis. By amplifying the process of bone and tissue destruction, the prevalence and severity of periodontitis increases and the effectiveness of periodontal treatments decreases. In addition, there is a dose-dependent effect, in the other words the harmful effect is proportional to the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the number of years smoked. Smoking cessation offers an improvement in overall health, a reduction in the risk of periodontitis, and a reduction in other oral diseases such as leukoplakia and cancers. In combination with other therapeutic measures, smoking cessation is an essential part of the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. In fact, the components of tobacco smoke have an impact on the occurrence and virulence of periodontal diseases. The role of the dentist in the care of these patients is to have knowledge about these diseases and the impacts of tobacco in the oral cavity. The dentist must be able to provide quality service to improve the quality of life of smoking patients.
