Abstract(s)

During the period of kindergarten education, children have contact with multiple forms of tradicional (folk) literature, particularly the songbook. However, as they enter the Primary School, and with their evolution through the different levels of schooling, the presence of the tradicional text loses its relevance in the educational contexts of the classroom and in school textbooks. Approaches to tradicional text are, often, based on authorial texts written on the basis of traditional text. Examples of these options present in textbooks are the texts by António Torrado or Luísa Ducla Soares. In the digital and image Era, it is not possible to imagine that the contexts of transmission of traditional literature can be restored, therefore, a large part of the oral literary heritage, the identity link of civilization groups, tends to be definitively lost. In fact, it is a paradox, there is an increasing talk of intangible cultural heritage and there are several policies to achieve the protection and preservation of world’s oral literary manifestations (tales, legends, proverbs, epics, ballads, etc). Facing the paradox of the attempt to preserve textual, heritage, oral manifestations and the loss of heritage memory by young people, we have been reflecting on several issues connected to the ways of preservation and the possible uses for the oral heritage collection. What will be the role of the school, particularly the Portuguese class, in the preservation of memory and oral textual heritage? How are the different libraries (municipal and from schools) helping until now, and, in the future, how can they contribute to the preservation of traditional literature? Based on these issues, and always thinking in the major urgency of protecting an ancient oral literary heritage, we start with a ballad of the modern Portuguese oral tradition, “Bela Infanta”, we think carefully on the ways of preserving the memory, and we suggest a set of activities that can be developed in a library space, therefore, giving a very important contribute to the preservation of the oral literary heritage.
