Abstract(s)
This study was carried out as part of the Internship IV curricular unit of the Master's Degree in Pre-School Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and resulted from the implementation of a research project carried out with a 4th grade class of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education. The aim of this research was to understand how the combination of reading, grammar and writing can boost awareness of how adjectives function in the writing of descriptions. Thus, the objectives of the study were, on the one hand, to describe the students' conceptions of adjectives and, on the other hand, to characterize their use of adjectives, both orally and in writing, more specifically when describing a character in descriptive sequences, as part of narratives or description texts. To this end, we used qualitative research, more specifically Research into Practice (Ponte, 2002), in which data was collected through unstructured observation and documentary analysis and analyzed through content analysis of the answers given by the students in the activities framed by the Grammar Lab (Duarte, 2008) on adjectives and in the proposals for writing and evaluating descriptive texts. The results obtained from this research project have shown that the combination of reading, grammar and writing can boost both the students' communicative skills in writing descriptive texts and their metalinguistic reflection skills.
