Abstract(s)
The following pages constitute the final report of activities for the project started in the second semester of the Curricular Unit “Estágio”, part of the program for the Master and Specialist degree in Child Health and Pediatrics. Under this program several objectives were defined as well as activities for their achievement in a Pediatrics Intensive and Special Care Unit. This work has as its main theme the preparation of children ranging pre-school and school age for painful procedures. This has risen from the observation of the care provided to children in the Unit during interment, which allowed me to identify the need for improvement in this area. During their time in the Unit, children undergo a number of procedures that are sources of pain, stress and anxiety for themselves most of all, but parents and nurses are also affected by these episodes as witnesses to the child’s suffering. Strategies which prepare children for painful procedures are autonomous nursing interventions, and they reduce pain and stress in both child and parents. In this way, they minimize undesirable consequences of hospitalization, making care more humane and of better quality. Searching a philosophy of Atraumatic Care, this project went first through several locations, which were chosen for being known as experts in the field and where those strategies are skilfuly executed, in the hope that I could develop my own skills as Specialist Nurse. For this, I resorted to observation, analysis, reflection and scientific literature. A project based methodology was followed throughout. First, using an open questionaire, I made a diagnosis of the Unit’s nursing team training needs. From these results, a plan was designed to implement the project in the Unit. The training strategies used were modeling, training sessions and reflection and analysis of case studies, and they were planed taking into account the location, the context, resources and personal peculiarities, which aimed at developing relevant skills within the team.
