Abstract(s)
The variety of techniques and materials currently available in orthodontics allow the clinical to make his own therapeutic options according to the individual patient's needs, requiring a detailed knowledge of characteristics of each system. Over the course of several decades, since the appearance of the first orthodontic system, to the first self-ligating bracket to the present time, there have been many studies on the variables of these systems. Self-ligating bracket systems have gained popularity within the scientific community, yet their clinical superiority over conventional systems is not yet consensual. The aim of this bibliographic review is to verify if there are differences between the self-ligating and conventional systems, in several parameters, based on the current scientific knowledge. A bibliographic search was performed using electronic databases, namely PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, ScienceDirect, B-on, Medline, Google Scholar and SciELO. Were selected books and articles published between 2002 and 2019, with full text available in English, Portuguese or Spanish and organized according to the hierarchy pyramid of scientific evidence. The analysis of the studies consulted shows that, so far, there is no scientific evidence to prove the superiority of self-ligating systems compared to conventional systems, since the results are contradictory.
