Abstract(s)
A implementação desta
Technological advancements, combined with medical and surgical progress, have led to a decrease in mortality rates among children with Complex Congenital Heart Disease. However, their survival is sometimes associated with multiple and prolonged hospitalizations, which have consequent implications for their quality of life and that of their families (Bertaud et al., 2016; Morell et al., 2019). In this regard, it is relevant to investigate to what extent the implementation of a palliative approach to this population can be beneficial. Despite the growing interest in the incorporation of Pediatric Palliative Care in the care of children and families with Complex Congenital Heart Disease, referrals remain low. Therefore, the study focused on nursing interventions that facilitate a palliative approach to children with Complex Congenital Heart Disease and their families. Simultaneously, the study will analyze the educational journey experienced in order to develop competencies as a Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing and as a Master’s in Nursing. A reflective methodology was adopted for its development, based on the project method. The theoretical framework consisted of the application of Katharine Kolcaba's Comfort Theory, together with guidelines for the practice of Family-Centered Care and Atraumatic Care. From the reflective analysis, I highlight the ongoing need to raise awareness among professionals who care for these children and families, as well as among the general population, regarding the issues surrounding Pediatric Palliative Care. The implementation of this care philosophy will enhance the maximization of the child and family's quality of life, developmental potential, and comfort. To achieve this, it is essential to develop policies aimed at improving the quality of services, institutions, and governmental support, facilitating care for children with palliative needs and their families.
