Background: The legislative change in the Penal Code was the great support and leverage in the defense of the rights of companion animals. Objective: To develop, optimize, and validate a method for the identification of drugs and organophosphate pesticides in biological (blood) of dogs and cats by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry to respond to situations of poisoning of pets with court validity. Materials and methods: The methodology used is obtained by two methods. The solid phase extraction method (SPE) and the confirmation method of chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Results: In order to validate the method by the guideline, standard practices for method validation in forensic toxicology it was possible to identify a limit of detection (LOD) of 50 ng/mL for 8 compounds. Conclusion: A toxicological analysis in companion animals becomes a challenging and important process in the diagnosis in cases of poisoning.
