Abstract(s)
Pyometra is a uterine pathology of great relevance in veterinary medicine, being one of the main causes of surgical intervention in unspayed female dogs and cats. It is characterized by the accumulation of purulent content in the uterus, resulting from hormonal changes and bacterial infections, with the potential to cause sepsis and organ failure if not treated promptly. Early diagnosis is essential and relies on anamnesis, physical examination, and complementary tests, such as laboratory blood analyses and imaging exams, which are fundamental for confirmation and differentiation from other uterine pathologies. This report was prepared as part of the curricular internship for the Veterinary Nursing degree at the Escola Superior de BiociĆŖncias de Elvas. The internship took place at ClĆnica VeterinĆ”ria de Boliqueime, Algarve, over a five-month period. During this time, various clinical practice activities were carried out, focusing on three cases of pyometra: closed pyometra in a dog, closed pyometra in a cat, and open pyometra in a dog. The student participated in anesthetic monitoring, interpretation of complementary tests, and surgical assistance in ovariohysterectomies, applying theoretical knowledge to practical cases. The internship enabled the consolidation of technical skills and identified areas for improvement, such as the need for additional training in anesthesia and monitoring of critical patients. Furthermore, opportunities for improvement in clinical processes were observed, including the management of essential supplies and the establishment of isolated spaces for animals with infectious diseases. The internship allowed the student to become more autonomous and confident in performing essential techniques in veterinary nursing, strengthening her professional profile.
