Abstract(s)
The main goal of this report is to illustrate my journey throughout the Child and Pediatric Health Nursing Master's Degree. With this document, I intend to present the contributions of the different contexts of the professional internship in the development of the specialist nurse’s skills from the common core, as well as those related to the child and pediatric health area. Furthermore, I intend to demonstrate my development regarding the skills of designing and documenting nursing care of children and their parents, as well as the results obtained from research and activities developed within the scope of my personal development project “Breastfeeding: parental mastery promotion”. In order to achieve the objectives identified, I carried out free research in databases and books, as well as documents from health entities such as the Health Directorate-General and the World Health Organization. To explain my development of care design, I used the E4Nursing documentation platform for each clinical case under study. Given the chosen theme, the research carried out demonstrated that the main factors influencing the decision to start and maintain exclusive breastfeeding are the intention to breastfeed, parental knowledge, maternal self-efficacy, socio-family support and health professionals support, mothers' age, religion, culture, meaning attributed to breastfeeding, health of the mother and/or child, and type of birth. Based on the above, and on the fact that some of these factors are capable of being modifiable, it is important to understand which nursing interventions can contribute to changing aspects that as an negative impact on breastfeeding. According to the analyzed articles, interventions with an impact on breastfeeding promoting are nurses’ support, health education actions, establishment of support networks, promotion of breastfeeding corners, health professionals’ training on the subject, implementation of the United Nations Children's Fund baby-friendly hospitals’ initiative, adherence to the marketing code in relation to breast milk substitutes, breastfeeding promotion campaigns, as well as interventions in the context of school health. The Nurse Specialist in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing must have a preponderant and differentiated role in children and young people’s care throughout their life, and must have an active role on exclusive breastfeeding promotion due to its advantages in maximizing child's health.
