Abstract(s)
The Azores are a small peripherical insular territory in which tourism has gained a growing economic and social weight. It is a very particular destination, focused on authenticity and nature tourism, and as such the creation of small dimension accommodation units, blended in the Azorean landscape, traditions and culture are a structuring element on the tourism development in the region. Based on market tendencies, the destination’s potential, the touristic evolution of the region and the rural tourism, this work’s focus is to evaluate whether there is a market and economic and financial viability for the creation of a rural tourism venture on the São Miguel island. This work’s methodology is based on empirical interviews to a group of tourism and rural tourism specialists, rural tourism owners and owners of touristic enterprises with different typologies. These interviews were useful to understand the stakeholder’s opinion concerning the rural tourism concept, the path to be followed by Azorean tourism in a near future and in consequence to evaluate the relevance of investing on this business. Also, a business plan was drawn in order to conclude on the economic and financial viability of this project. The conclusions drawn from the interviews to the main stakeholders and the course taken by the regional politics on driving the Azorean tourism towards principles of sustainability and environmental preservation, lead us to believe that there is a market to invest in rural tourism in São Miguel and the results obtained in the business plan, with a NPV 1 564 472€ of and a IRR of 31,04%, and a payback period of 4 years, from the post-financing perspective, show that the project has economic and financial viability.
