Abstract(s)
Objectives: Evaluate elder people self-perception of oral health quality by giving patients a survey that includes the GOHAI index. Determine if the sociodemographic indicators and subjective oral health conditions are associated with oral health levels of perception. Materials and Methods: The convenience sampling consisted of 93 elder patients aged 65 or over, who had a geriatric dentistry appointment at Egas Moniz Dental Clinic. After the consultation, a survey consisting of sociodemographic questions and subjective oral health conditions was applied integrating GOHAI – Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index, which was translated and adapted to Portuguese. The statistical treatment of Data was made using descriptive statistics. The tests used were Chi-squared test and the tstudent test with a significance level of p 0.05. Results: The sample participants were mostly men, between the age of 65 and 75 years, married, and they use dentures due to teeth loss. The mean of GOHAI was 37,75 which indicates a moderate perception of oral health by the sample in the study. Most subjects (47,3%) showed moderate self-perception (30-33 points) which coincides with the mean of the answers. 28% of the sample showed low perception (≤30 points) and 24,7% showed high perception (34-36 points). Statistical significance was found between marital status and oral health perception p = 0.048. Married individuals have a higher perception of oral health than single and divorced men while widows show a low perception. Women, elderlies over 86 years of age, single, divorced or widows, with high school or higher education and with missing teeth that don´t have dentures, tend to have a lower oral health perception. Conclusion: Oral health perception in Elderly patients of Egas Moniz Dental Clinic is moderate.
