Abstract(s)
In scope of the 2nd Master's Degree Course in Medical Surgical Nursing at the São José de Cluny Nursing School, it was prepared the internship report "Specialized Care to the Person in a Critical Situation: a path until the specificity of cardiac surgery". With the objectives of demonstrating the capability of organization and planning of nursing interventions to the critical patient and family, analysis and reflection on them and the corresponding ethical implications, as well as scientific explanation and communication of their conclusions, the report evidences the progress carried out along three clinical placements to consolidate the common and specific competencies of the specialist nurse in medical surgical nursing, particularly in the area of care of the critically ill person. It reveals a special interest in cardiac surgery and underlines the acquirement of skills to care for the person experiencing complex processes of critical illness and/or organic failure, to maximize intervention in the prevention and infection control and to stimulate the response to catastrophes or multi-victim emergency. Based on a descriptive, analytical and reflective methodology, supported by the latest scientific evidence, the report is organized into three chapters. A first one that bases the completion of the master’s degree course in a professional path oriented to continuous learning, followed by a chapter that conceptually frames the concept of competence and focuses on the development of the common competencies and, finally, a third chapter, which presents itself in the narrative form, is a detailed description of the contribution of the different contexts of clinical placements in the development of the specific competencies of nursing for caring for the critically ill person. In a path towards the acquisition of knowledge, competencies and attitudes congruent with the 2nd Cycle (Master’s Degree), the report reflects the application of scientific knowledge in the different contexts of clinical placements, from judgment to decision making, through communication and share of the previously mentioned, presenting a clear commitment to the development of self-learning skills.
