Abstract(s)
Hope is considered as a determinant of health having effects on the prevention of mental illness, suicide, caregiver stress and assists in the recovery of the person with mental disorder’s experience. In turn, hopelessness is one of the suicide factors and development of physical and mental diseases. The Specialist Nurse in Psychiatric-Mental Health, due to the proximity of the people to whom they care, has the duty to evaluate this feeling of hopelessness and intervene in this. In their intervention, nurses should make therapeutic use of themselves to unhide the hope of the other. The objectives of the internship were: develop activities that promote personal and professional development, based on self-knowledge and self-awareness; identify the needs and problems of the person with mental disorder’s experience; comprehend the impact of hope on the person with experience of mental illness; develop hope promoting psychotherapeutic interventions. For the performance of nursing interventions, Jean Watson's Transpersonal Theory of Caring was taken into account, which considers faith-hope as one of the factors of care, and that nurses cannot ignore the role that hope has in the person's life, empowering them to find their own sense of hope. The internship was divided into two contexts (community and hospital), where individual sessions were developed, with hope promoting therapeutical activities. The hope promoting nursing interventions implemented during the internship contributed to the increase of the levels of hope, having some changes. Thus, it is important to raise awareness of this theme in health care and in the various contexts.
