Abstract(s)
The present work sought to analyze the way how, in the Azores, namely in the island of Faial, cetacean watching activities, which are subject to a strict legal framework, appeared after the end of the era of whale hunting in the islands. It also sought to demonstrate how the preservation of cultural heritage associated with whale hunting, alongside observation activities that respect environmental factors, is a relevant element of sustainable tourism practices. A qualitative approach was adopted comprising bibliographic analysis and participant observation, on the one hand, and interviews to cetacean watching operators and members of the local community, on the other. Results show that cetacean watching activities, which play an important role in the tourism development of the island, result from a shift towards sustainable development that allows the preservation of cultural memories alongside an attractive tourism activity without neglecting environmental protection concerns, thus promoting economic, environmental, social and cultural development.
