Abstract(s)
To obtain a Master's degree in Nursing with a specialization in Community Nursing in the area of Community Health and Public Health Nursing, and as part of the final internship included in the respective study cycle, this report is presented. The aim is to critically reflect on the path developed in the skills acquisition process. Professional internships I and II were carried out in a Public Health Unit and in a Community Care Unit, of a public sector health institution, in the northern region of the country. Amongst other activities, we highlight the implementation and development of the community intervention project “Promoting healthy eating: a look at school snacks and behavioural determinants”, among 7th year students (2023/2024), at a secondary school in the northern region of Portugal. The reference is Meleis' theory of transitions (Meleis, 2012), and the Health Belief Model (Rosenstock, 2005) and its underlying methodology is Strategic Health Planning (Imperatori, 1993; Tavares, 1992). The aim was groups and communities, by promoting healthy snacks among students, having into account the interrelationship with behavioural determinants, and contribute to the development of Nurse Specialist in Community Health and Public Health Nursing skills. Assessment activities were developed, which allowed students' knowledge about healthy eating - snacking to gain an overall health gain of 21.4%. Integrated into the major school health project at UCC, this is a starting point for future research, with the expectation this to be replicated in other secondary schools, and to be able to be designed as a longitudinal study. The path taken was relevant to acquire the required skills, to gain knowledge in Community Health Nursing and Public Health and to promote training of groups and communities. As a society, it is essential to develop actions having ethics towards future generations in mind, so they can develop to their fullest, with an invaluable potential return.
