Abstract(s)
The purpose of this study was to analyze the implications for the health and wellbeing of police officers resulting from night and shift work. The human being is biologically predisposed to be governed by the presence or absence of sunlight in the day/night alternation in which the day is associated with activity and the night with rest. The scientific community refers to the pernicious effects resulting from working at night and in a system of shifts. Police officers, particularly in operational services due to the varied and complex situations they are faced with, very demanding on a physical level, and on an intellectual level, are prone to great strain and stress, leading to illnesses that are often disabling for work. The most important asset of an institution are its women and men, it is impossible to eradicate the negative effects of this type of work, but it is vital to minimize the negative effects caused on their health as much as possible, in order to maintain the operational capacity of the P.S.P. and reduce the high costs associated with the disease. We will look at measures that can be taken to mitigate the harmful health consequences resulting from night and shift work.
