Abstract(s)
no domicilío.
2003).
Análise dos resultados: Os participantes neste estudo tinham idades compreendidas entre os 51 e os 71 anos;
do ensino básico (67,3%).
cuidadoras inform
Introduction: The aging population and the cost containment policies in Portugal are producing changes in the provision of health care, particularly for the elderly. When they become sick, the society press families to be responsible for providing care at home, due to economic, legal, cultural and religious factors. Informal caregivers who took care of the elderly, by instinct, will and readiness, often express despair, fatigue or anxiety. Hence arises our interest in defining, implementing and evaluating a psycho-educational program focused on the informal caregivers of dependent elderly. This study aims to develop, in conjunction with health professionals and the informal caregivers, an intervention program. Methodology: This is an action research study, involving 55 caregivers of elderly dependents registered in the USF (Family Health Unit) of Trofa. To collect data we use the COPE Index (McKee et al., 2003). Results: Participants in this study were aged between 51 and 71 years, were mostly women (91%), married or in civil union (82%) and had the first cycle of basic education (67.3%). In terms of felt needs, 28.4% of the caregivers expressed a desire for emotional and psychological support, 25.7% training in providing care and support for care. Discussion: According to literature from our results we can build a program with the group, encouraging them to discuss their plans. Conclusions: Given the results of our study and in conjunction with careers and health professionals from the USF, we designed a psycho-educational program. With the program we want to provide caregivers with information relevant, the opportunity to exchange experiences and emotions and alternatives for dealing with their problems.
