Abstract(s)
Introduction: Community Pharmacies play an important role by offering distinctive pharmaceutical services, such as Individualized Medication Preparation (IMP) and Medication Review (MR) with the aim of optimizing patients’ pharmacotherapy. However, there is still a scarcity of data regarding the implementation of both services and how they are delivered in daily practice. Aims: The main goals of this work were to characterize the IMP and MR services, from their implementation to how they are provided, and to assess the potential barriers to integrating the MR service into IMP. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted (April-July 2023), where an e-questionnaire was administered to a sample of pharmacies (estimated sample of 202 pharmacies). This questionnaire was disseminated via mailmarketing and social media, aiming to characterize the participating pharmacies, assess the degree of implementation of both services, and evaluate how they are currently provided. Data analysis was performed using uni- and bivariate statistics, as well as logistic regressions, with a 95% confidence interval (IBM SPSS Statistics v.29.0). Results: A sample of 229 pharmacies was obtained, with the majority of them (71.6%; n=164) providing the IMP service, and, of these, 70.7% (n=116) provided it to nursing homes. It was found that 68% (n=111) of pharmacies offered the IMP service simultaneously with MR. However, when evaluated independently, only 21.4% (n=49) provided the MR service. The main barriers identified were the lack of recognition and visibility of the service and the lack of collaboration from other professionals. Conclusion: It was found that the majority of pharmacies already offer the IMP service, including for nursing homes, but only a small portion provides the MR service independently. Additionally, a significant portion of the sample already delivers both services simultaneously.
