Abstract(s)
Abstract In this work we will find out if the Air Defence weapon systems, in their function of protection, are ready to combat the new air threats. After the events of September 11 appeared a new type of air threat. The appearance of new air threats, posed a challenge to the Air Defence weapons systems. This challenge meant the development of new capabilities in order to combat the aerial threat as a whole. The scientific method chosen to be used in this work is the deductive method. This method starts with a general analysis of the facts to reach a particular analysis. The purpose of these analyzes is to have facts that lead us to reach the conclusions. This research is mainly based in documents of Portuguese and United States Army, and of the Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty, national and international military magazines and interviews. From the analysis of the data it is concluded that the new air threats are currently a greater concern for the ground forces. In terms of weapon systems, only when combined short range air defence and high and medium air defence systems it is possible to provide effective protection against them. Through the updates of the systems in use, lead to that currently the Air Defence Artillery has a key role in protecting the battlefield against the air threats. The essential capabilities for the Air Defence Artillery weapon systems are based on interoperability, modularity and mobility. The importance of the AAA weapon systems is demonstrated in the capability of protection against rockets, artillery and mortars and in the new ballistic missile defenses.
