Diabetes Mellitus: a importância da consulta de enfermagem no controlo da doença

Abstract(s)
O presente documento foi redigido no âmbito do estágio curricular da licenciatura de
Enfermagem Veterinária, realizado pela aluna no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade
de Évora. Durante o estágio teve oportunidade de colocar em prática conhecimentos
adquiridos no curso, assim como desempenhar tarefas afetas ao enfermeiro veterinário.
No estágio foram realizadas atividades nas áreas da consulta, internamento, urgências,
cirurgia e análises laboratoriais. Neste âmbito, a aluna acompanhou 178 animais em
consulta, 172 em internamento e 67 em cirurgia, aos quais foram prestados os cuidados
adequados para assegurar o seu bem-estar. O tema do relatório vem na sequência do
acompanhamento de vários animais diabéticos, o que alertou a estagiária para o
relevante papel do Enfermeiro Veterinário no controlo da doença e na educação dos
proprietários dos respetivos animais. A Diabetes Mellitus, afeção endócrina comum em
animais de companhia, caracteriza-se por hiperglicemia e glicosúria persistentes,
podendo revelar-se fatal, quando não for devidamente controlada. Na consulta de
enfermagem focada no maneio e controlo da Diabetes Mellitus, o Enfermeiro
Veterinário tem um papel fulcral na educação do proprietário do animal, devendo ter
capacidade de aconselhar e esclarecer dúvidas relativas ao maneio e monitorização em
casa. Uma comunicação fluida e eficiente com os proprietários é crucial para alcançar
um adequado controlo glicémico em cães.
This document was written in the context of the curricular internship of the Veterinary Nursing degree, carried out by the student at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Évora. During the internship she had the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired in the course, as well as to perform tasks related to the veterinary nurse functions. During the internship the student carried out activities in the areas of consultation, hospitalization, emergency, surgery and laboratory analysis. In this context, the student followed 178 animals in consultation, 172 in hospitalization and 67 in surgery, to whom adequate care was provided to ensure their well-being. The theme of this report was elected after monitoring several diabetic animals, which alerted the intern to the relevant role of the Veterinary Nurse in the disease control and in the education of the pets’ owners. Diabetes mellitus, a common endocrine condition in companion animals, is characterized by persistent hyperglycemia and glycosuria, which can be fatal if not properly controlled. In the nursing consultation focused on the management and control of Diabetes Mellitus, the Veterinary Nurse has a central role in the education of the owner and should be able to advise and clarify any doubts regarding the management and monitorization at home. A simple and efficient communication with owners is crucial to achieve proper glycaemic control in dogs.
