AIM: To verify if there are differences in the condylar position between the intermaxillary record in Centric Relationship (CR) and the intermaxillary record in the Reference Position (RP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The articulator assembly of 20 subjects was performed in articulator and intermaxillary records were performed in CR and RP, using bimanual manipulation techniques and chinpoint guidance, respectively. The relation between the maxilla and the skull was obtained through the facial arch and, through Condylar Position Measurement (CPM), the condylar positions were recorded in CR and RP in the three planes of the space. After the records were obtained, the NemoCeph program was used to measure the difference of the condylar positions in CR and RP. RESULTS: The t-student test of a sample was performed, and statistically significant diferences were not found in the condylar position, in several planes of the space, except in the sagittal plane in the right condyle (p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: There is a statistically significant difference between the intermaxillary record in CR and the intermaxillary record in RP, only in the sagittal plane in the right condyle. In the other planes of space, vertical and transverse, were not found statistically significant differences in the condylar position. The results obtained are indicators that we are able to perform the intermaxillary record in CR or in RP, being thus dependent on the opinion and experience of the clinician.
