Abstract(s)
A presente dissertação visa abordar o tema da polimedicação e a sua influência ao nível
da cavidade oral. Trata-se de um assunto não consensual e com crescente relevância na
atualidade, tendo em conta as alterações demográficas que se têm vindo a verificar ao
longo dos anos, com um aumento da esperança média de vida e consequente aumento do número de fármacos prescritos por individuo.
Uma vez que a saúde geral dos pacientes está diretamente relacionada com a sua saúde oral é crucial os médicos dentistas estarem alerta, não só para eventuais manifestações orais como consequência de doenças sistémicas e dos efeitos adversos da medicação efetuada para o tratamento das mesmas, como para o potencial risco de reações medicamentosas associadas à prescrição em pacientes polimedicados.
É então cada vez mais uma necessidade essencial observar o paciente como um todo,
estando capacitados para identificar potenciais risco de desenvolvimento de doenças bem como dar resposta quando estas já se encontram presentes, de forma a contribuir para a melhoria de vida da população idosa.
The present dissertation addresses the issue of polymedication and its influence on the oral cavity. This is a non-consensual issue, with increasing relevance today, considering the demographic changes that have been occurring over the years, with an increase in the average life expectancy and consequent increase in the number of drugs prescribed per individual. Since patient’s general health is directly related to their oral health, it is crucial for dentists to be aware of possible oral manifestations as a consequence of systemic diseases and of adverse effects of medication used to treat them, but also aware of potential drug reactions associated with prescription in polymedicated patients. It is essential to envision the patient as a whole in order to identify potential risks of disease, as well as their treatment when they are already present, and contribute to the improvement of the elderly population.
