Abstract(s)
Objectives: Researching the risk factors related to diseases or injuries identified as harmful to athletes' sporting performance associated with oral health and categorizing them as specialities with an emphasis on preventing and treatment in order to offer the athletes an integrated, relevant, rapid, complete follow-up. Methods: The research was carried out in Pubmed, Web Of Science, Scielo, Cochrane Library and Embase databases. The studies were analyzed and selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, namely studies that included the analysis of the prevalence and severity of risk factors and oral diseases that most affect the athletes oral health, highlighting the various means of diagnosis and treatment. Results: In the 40 included studies, the prevalence of dental caries was 36.5% e and that of dental erosion was 44.6%. Within the scope of periodontal disease, the prevalence of gingivitis ranged from 32% to 77% while periodontitis values ranged from 8% to 21.6%. For temporomandibular disorders, the prevalence values were established between 9.5% and 29%. The prevalence values of malocclusion ranged from 3% to 29%. As for trauma values, the prevalence of bone trauma was 30.9%, orofacial trauma was 42.6%, the prevalence of soft tissue trauma was 24.6% and dental trauma was 22.4% Conclusion: Sports practice has an impact on the oral health of athletes, manifesting itself in the prevalence values of various oral pathologies and risk factors presented by this population compared to the general population. It was concluded that it is imperative to standardize the evaluation methods of all aspects analyzed in order to make an effective comparison between the studies possible.
