Abstract(s)
This internship report was developed within the scope of the curricular unit Professional Internship with Report – Module II with the objective of acquiring specialized skills in the field of Nursing Perioperative Care and is entitled “The Process of Preparation and Knowledge in the Perioperative Context: Challenges for Nursing Ontology – Development of Specific Competencies in Perioperative Nursing”. The perioperative context requires highly differentiated action, with great technical but also conceptual differentiation, and there are still many challenges regarding the representation of the discipline’s knowledge and the autonomous decision-making process in this specific domain. The user undergoing an anaesthetic-surgical process must be actively involved and held responsible for their decision-making regarding the adoption of behaviours that promote their preparation and surgical recovery in a healthy and appropriate way. The general objective of this internship was to develop specialized skills in the field of Nursing Perioperative Care, by promoting patient’s surgical knowledge and training regarding their anaesthetic-surgical process in an environment that guarantees safety and quality of care. The methodology used in this work included carrying out a literature review of scientific articles and reference documents in electronic databases regarding this issue (MEDLINE Complete, CINAHL Ultimate, CINAHL Complete, Open Access Scientific Repositories of Portugal (RCAAP), Google Scholar and bibliography in the area of health sciences and social and human sciences), the presentation of two clinical cases in an internship context and critical reflection on the skills acquired with the appropriate evidence. At the end of this training process, it was noticeable that highly literate patients are more prone to adapt to health-illness transitions in the perioperative field. Furthermore, these patients are also more likely to, through knowledge and skills application, self-manage their perioperative health process with success, and therefore they don’t need to overuse health services and saturate health systems. Moreover, it was clear that, although Health Literacy is a recent research domain, it is one of the strategic domains with regard to strategic investment in the health field.
