Medicinal plant use during pregnancy : an exploratory study in Portuguese women

| dc.description.abstract | Medicinal plants are ingested during pregnancy, however, the safety and efficacy of many of these practices remain insufficiently supported by scientific evidence. This study aimed to identify the medicinal plants used by Portuguese women during pregnancy and to understand the reasons behind their use. This descriptive, exploratory study involved administering an online survey to 35 women. Data analysis included simple descriptive statistics and thematic categorisation of open responses. The most commonly used plants were calendula, nettle, chamomile, ginger, lavender, raspberry and rosehip. The primary motivations for use were the prevention of stretch marks, relief of nausea, relaxation, improvement of iron levels and preparation for labour. Most participants reported positive effects. Around 71.4% of participants mentioned receiving professional guidance, and all of them used more than one medicinal plant. While many women perceive the benefits of using medicinal plants, the lack of robust safety data requires caution. | dc.description.abstract | Plantas medicinais são ingeridas durante a gravidez, no entanto, a segurança e a eficácia de muitas destas práticas ainda não possuem validação científica robusta. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar plantas medicinais utilizadas por mulheres portuguesas durante a gravidez e compreender as motivações associadas ao seu uso. Este é um estudo exploratório descritivo, com aplicação de questionário online a 35 mulheres. A análise dos dados incluiu estatística descritiva simples e categorização temática das respostas abertas. As mais frequentemente referidas foram: calêndula, urtiga, camomila, gengibre, lavanda, framboeseira e rosa mosqueta. As principais motivações incluíam a prevenção de estrias, alívio de náuseas, relaxamento, melhoria do ferro e preparação para o parto. A maioria das participantes relatou efeitos positivos. Cerca de 71,4% referiram orientação profissional, e 100% recorreram a mais de uma planta medicinal. Embora a maioria das mulheres tenha percebido benefícios no uso de plantas medicinais, a ausência de dados robustos sobre a sua segurança exige cautela.
