Abstract(s)
No
Patient safety is, today, a concern that necessarily requires management of the incidents, especially by managers at the three levels of intervention. We seek to understand patient safety in pediatrics, the importance given to incidents and the implementation of the patient’s Plano Nacional de Segurança. The promotion of safety levels by nurse managers has been presenting itself as a topic of growing interest and concern, as it has become increasingly relevant that they have risk management skills and develop a safety environment, both for staff as well as patients. It should be noted that one of the areas of competence of managers is the quality and safety of the activities carried out in their wards in order to guarantee the development of a model of excellence and reference for the continuous improvement of the quality of health care provision and organizations. This study fits into the qualitative methodology in paediatric wards, with data collected by observation and semi-structured interviews with Nurse Managers from four wards in the north of Portugal. For data processing, we resorted to content analysis, following the guidelines of Bardin’s method and using the Atlas.ti tool, and subsequently a floating reading, categorization and organization of subjects. From the analysis of results, 6 networks emerged: Safety Culture, Safety Strategies, Safety Training, the Occurrence of Adverse Event, Centrality in Safety and Priority Safety Areas. The results obtained point to the existence of many elements that identify the mechanisms and safety procedures that allow guaranteeing levels of safety in the paediatric wards studied, in the patients and in the professional teams. However, opportunities for improvement at this level were also pointed out and identified, with errors still being considered a topic that causes discomfort, fear and even some apprehension on the part of the health professionals who collaborated in this investigation. The results obtained allow us to conclude that the concerns and challenges faced by managers of nursing wards with regards to safety management are transversal to all studied contexts
