Abstract(s)
emocional.
The death of a child, regardless of their age, is a devastating loss. Mourning due to death is a natural reaction to a loss and determines a process that aims to adapt to a new reality, which implies emotional recovery. The concept of pregnancy loss includes miscarriage, fetal death, neonatal death, medical termination of pregnancy and voluntary termination of pregnancy. Intervention with the couple that begins mourning due to pregnancy loss is a topic little investigated by the scientific community. Given the complexity of this process, which involves intense emotional suffering, the midwife does play a decisive role in assisting the couple and family acquiring mourning strategies. This research starts with the question “What are the Obstetric Nurse’s strategies in managing the couple’s mourning due to pregnancy loss?”, where a scoping review is carried out according to the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and empirical study, with the inclusion of semi-structured interviews of six couples undergoing management of mourning due to pregnancy loss, during hospitalization. Laurie Gottlieb's “Strengths-Based Nursing Care” represents the nursing theory that guides my care practice, based on a person-centered and humanity-centered approach. Producing more knowledge about the role of the Midwife when dealing with a scenario of pregnancy loss can contribute to the implementation of care models in Portugal, which may favour more differentiated and humanized experiences to couples undergoing a mourning process due to pregnancy loss. In a visit to the bereavement team led by Midwives at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, I corroborated with the most current scientific recommendations, noting that professional training in this area allows for an individualized intervention, adapted to the couple undergoing a mourning process due to pregnancy loss, which ultimately improves their quality of life, well-being and balance. This report contains the reflective course of the clinical practice experienced, for the acquisition and development of common and specific competences of the midwife, as well as the Master's degree conferers.
