Abstract(s)
Arrhythmias or dysrhythmias are disorders in the formation, conduction, frequency and /or regularity of the electrical stimulus of the heart. According to recent studies, these changes were observed in 2.5% of anesthetized dogs. When present, they may increase the risk of hypoxia, hypotension, impairment of organ perfusion, and even cardiac arrest. Animals over six years of age, asymptomatic or with cardiorespiratory/pulmonary symptoms should undergo preanesthetic evaluation before any procedures. The objective of this study was to characterize the animals assisted by the Cardiology Service of the Veterinary Hospital of the Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnical School of the “João de Mesquita e Filho” State University – Botucatu Campus, which were selected for preanesthetic cardiac evaluation. It aims to identify the alterations found, both in anamnesis and physical examination and in the electrocardiographic exam. Several demographic and clinical parameters were assessed in order to study its influence on eletrocardiography. Data was analyzed through R® software for parametric tests (descriptive analysis, analysis of variance, T test, Tukey post hoc test and chi-square test). The present study showed that 64.8% of the geriatric animals were asymptomatic. The increase in the duration of the P wave and in the QRS complex were the most frequently observed alterations, in 70.5% and 69.3%, respectively. This study emphasizes the need to carry out a complete pre-anesthetic evaluation to geriatric animals, whether or not they have been previously diagnosed with heart disease.
