Abstract(s)

Given the economic importance of weed control in agriculture, in particular in organic horticulture, it is necessary to study effective alternatives. In the present work the aim was to evaluate and compare three modalities of weed control: thermal weeding, mechanical weeding and weed cutting with a brushcutter. The trial took place between April and September 2018, on the agricultural plot of the Escola Superior Agrária, which is certified in organic production and where the pepper (Capsicum annum L) and kale (Brassica oleraceae L) crops were installed. Four repetitions were installed for each 3 crop lines, and for each modality, totaling 24 repetitions. The aim was to evaluate the effects of alternative weed control practices in organic horticulture on overall soil fertility and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the soil. The parameters evaluated were the apparent density at the soil surface, the rates of soil surface infiltration, soil particle size texture, chemical analyses (summary, exchange bases, micronutrients and heavy metals) and identification of the predominant macrofauna in the soil. The results obtained in the study modalities show that, despite the lack of continuity of observations over the years, they point out that the modalities evaluated may be viable and effective alternatives in weed control in organic agriculture. Keywords: soil bulk density, organic horticulture, weeds, tension infiltrometer, weeding, thermal weeding, soil porosity
