Abstract(s)
The liver is a vitally important organ and any dysfunction will have serious consequences for our body in general. Cirrhosis, the most common chronic liver disease, is a major public health problem. Liver cirrhosis is a chronic disease that develops as a result of the destruction of liver cells as well as their regeneration in a disordered way. It is a disease that occurs in the final phase of chronic liver diseases with an irreversible disruption of its normal structure and function. Depending on its aetiology and severity, the disease presents different symptoms and complications, as well as oral manifestations with the influence of bacteria. These bacteria play an important role in the onset of periodontitis as well as in the development of chronic liver diseases, especially non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The gut microbiome and liver disease communicate through the portal vein. Therefore, in liver disease, gut dysbiosis is formed with the presence of oral bacteria. Also, the chronic inflammation associated with periodontitis appears to contribute to the pathophysiology and natural progression of chronic liver diseases. Thus, there seems to be a certain bidirectional relationship, which is why a new oral-intestinal-liver axis is emerging. However, this association is not yet fully established.
