Animal welfare is a central component of sheep production systems and is particularly important in handling operations prior to transport, given its impact on the animals’ physiological response. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of applying low-stress handling practices during the herding and loading of ewe lambs for transport, using rectal temperature and ocular temperature obtained via infrared thermography as physiological indicators of stress. The study was conducted at a sheep rearing and fattening farm in the district of Portalegre and involved 50 ewe lambs randomly assigned to two groups: a control group, subjected to conventional farm handling, and an experimental group, subjected to low-stress handling practices. Assessments were performed before and after a transport simulation. Significant differences in rectal temperature were observed depending on the time of assessment (p = 0.036), the experimental group (p = 0.012), and the interaction between the two (p = 0.013). In the control group, rectal temperature increased from 39.1 °C before transport to 39.5 °C after transport, while in the experimental group it decreased slightly from 39.1 °C to 39.0 °C. Regarding ocular temperature, a significant increase was observed between the assessment time points (p = 0.003), with mean values ranging from 39.6 °C to 40.1 °C in the control group and from 39.5 °C to 39.8 °C in the experimental group. However, no statistically significant differences were observed between groups (p = 0.072), nor was there an interaction between group and assessment time point (p = 0.647). It is concluded that the adoption of low-stress handling practices can mitigate the physiological response of sheep during pre-transport operations, showing a more consistent effect on rectal temperature than on ocular temperature.
