This project, developed within the Master’s Degree in Maternal and Obstetric Health Nursing at the Escola Superior de Enfermagem do Porto, proposes the implementation of the Aquatic Exercise Program in Pregnancy, based on the AIPAP® method. The initiative arises from the absence of structured programs led by Specialist Nurses in Maternal and Obstetric Health in community settings, despite strong evidence demonstrating the benefits of aquatic exercise for low-risk pregnant women. The intervention is supported by a scoping review that mapped current scientific literature, confirming multiple maternal, fetal, and neonatal benefits, without relevant contraindications when exercise is adequately supervised. The project will be developed in a Community Care Unit of a Local Health Unit in Northern Portugal, in partnership with the municipal swimming pool, aligning with the mission of Primary Health Care to promote healthy lifestyles, prevent complications, and strengthen self-care. Grounded in project methodology, the work includes situation diagnosis, planning, execution, and evaluation. The Aquatic Exercise Program in Pregnancy foresees weekly aquatic sessions, conducted by Specialist Nurses in Maternal and Obstetric Health certified in the AIPAP® method, focusing on self-care promotion, adaptation to pregnancy, and functional preparation for childbirth. The SWOT analysis identified as strengths the existence of motivated and qualified professionals, and as opportunities the favorable framework of national and international health policies. Limitations include the lack of a swimming pool in Primary Care facilities and potential logistical and economic barriers for pregnant women. In summary, this project is pertinent and feasible, with potential to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes, promote women’s empowerment, and reinforce the role of the Specialist Nurses in Maternal and Obstetric Health as a promoter of innovative, safe, and replicable interventions in community care.
