Um século depois, a participação militar portuguesa na Grande Guerra merece uma reflexão, no sentido de analisar que Memória temos desse conflito e compreender como ela chegou até aos nossos dias. Os objetos, os livros, o papel e as cerimónias que têm sido conservadas e preservadas, ajudam-nos a compreender a sua utilidade e importância, contribuindo, em última análise, para meditar sobre a identidade e sobre os valores que a comunidade castrense preserva.
Esta investigação propõe-se analisar a forma como a Memória da Grande Guerra tem sido preservada nas Forças Armadas, sendo o seu argumento desenvolvido ao longo de três conceitos-chave: as Representações Sociais, as Instituições de Memória e a Memória, materializando a sua própria construção.
Como resultado verificamos que, recaindo o seu esforço no Exército, a Memória da Grande Guerra tem sido preservada em duas dimensões distintas, a coletiva e a de grupo. Não tendo exatamente o mesmo significado evocativo, têm-se manifestado de forma própria e sujeitas a vicissitudes distintas, onde hoje assumem formas mais complexas de representação. Se por um lado a primeira espelhou as sucessivas conjunturas políticas, concorrendo com a ação da Liga dos Combatentes, a segunda representou a expressão identitária do combatente e das gentes locais com as unidades de guarnição. Abstract: A century after, the portuguese military participation in the Great War deserves a reflection, to analyze what Memory we have of this conflict and to understand how it has reached us. The objects, the books, the paper and the ceremonies that have been preserved, help us to understand their usefulness and importance, allowing us to reflect about the identity and the values which the military community preserves.
This work proposes to analyze how the Memory of the Great War was preserved in the Portuguese Armed Forces, developing its argument towards three key concepts: the Social Representations, the Institutions of Memory and Memory, which set up its own construction.
As a result, we found that, the Army has been performing the main preservation efforts and the Memory of the Great War has been preserved in two different dimensions, the collective and group dimension. Not having exactly the same evocative meaning, they have been showed in different ways as well as faced distinct fortunes, where today they assume more complex forms of representation. While the first one reflects the political conjunctures, competing with the Liga dos Combatentes´ actions, the second represented the expression of the combatant and locals´ identity towards their own garrison units.
