Abstract(s)
Nowadays, the navigator have at his disposal several aids so that he can navigate with safety, however this aids are mostly composed by the ship organic sensors. The UAV’s can innovate in that area by supplying information that neither come from external sources nor are physically incorporated in the ship. UAV’s have been deployed in many civilian and military missions. However, their role in the pilotage and maritime safety fields has been poorly documented. In this work it’s presented the feasibility of introducing a concept of the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in the field of pilotage and maritime safety. Firstly, a review of literature on the fields of maritime pilotage, aids to navigation, and unmanned aerial vehicles technology was carried out. Afterwards, three experimental tests were created. The first and second, dedicated to the study of the influence of an UAV in maritime pilotage were performed aboard a Portuguese Navy ship. The third test, dedicated to the study of the influence of an UAV in aids to navigation couldn’t be carried out. An analysis on the experiments results was conducted. It was verified that a piloting team liked the use of the UAV capacities in the planning and preparation of pilotage. The “bird eye-view” provided by the UAV was also well received by the pilotage team, especially in mooring and setting sail maneuvers. It’s concluded that UAV’s bring innovation and can be used in pilotage and maritime safety. It´s also proposed subsequent studies on using this technology in aids to navigation and in the financial and human resource feasibility of introducing it in the Portuguese Navy.
