Abstract(s)
The world in 2017 is a place of probable moral ambiguity. Designers are, as authors, subject to ethical decisions. Is there such thing as a completely responsible creation? What are the criteria for "good" design? Are designers aware of their actions? With some interviews with designers, we unveil the notion of "creative conscience" and the different criteria applied in real-life context considering ethical problems. The resulting realistic view is then confronted with a more utopian interpretation of the manifestos and principles of acknowledged designers (Gropius, Garland, Rams, Rand, Mau, Adbusters, Chochinov) to establish a “Vow of Creative Responsibility”. This "Vow" is then used as a moral compass for the experiments conducted in order to test its feasibility. A first experience is held with a group of first year students of the MA of Design and Visual Culture at IADE. The "Vow" was tested while attempting to perceive whether "creative awareness" exists. As a consequence we have the confirmation of nuances in the interpretation of the word "responsibility" and the presence of some extent of creative conscience. It was discovered that responsible creation is something that will be different for every designer. Any attempt of generalization may prove an unsuccessful exercise. It is then interesting to try to do something that may seem responsible to the author himself. In this sense, a second individual experience takes a critical / speculative design approach (Dunne & Raby) and results in two types of artifacts (Conscious Objects and Objects of Self-Aggression). These artifacts become the starting point for debate with designers about possible ethical anxieties.
