A Força Aérea Portuguesa (FA) será a breve trecho colocada perante uma nova realidade que advém das capacidades que caracterizam a nova frota de aeronaves que chegará ao país já a partir de 2023 para substituir o C-130H. A escolha da aeronave recaiu no novo KC-390, fabricada pela Embraer. Uma das novidades que o KC-390 trará à FA é a capacidade de reabastecimento aéreo (AAR).
Sendo o AAR uma novidade na FA, com este estudo pretende-se investigar a operacionalização da capacidade no âmbito nacional e internacional. Do ponto de vista interno importa perceber se o KC-390 é compatível com as frotas existentes na FA relativamente ao AAR, bem como, identificar as vantagens operacionais que daí possam advir. Internacionalmente, a intenção será aferir de que forma Portugal poderá utilizar uma aeronave reabastecedora em iniciativas multinacionais.
Através de uma metodologia caracterizada por um raciocínio indutivo, assente numa estratégia de investigação qualitativa e num desenho de pesquisa de tipo transversal, conclui-se que o AAR poderá ser operacionalizado no âmbito nacional considerando a compatibilidade com várias aeronaves da FA. Internacionalmente, e devido ao défice de plataformas reabastecedoras, serão inúmeras as iniciativas que Portugal poderá integrar, proporcionadas pela capacidade AAR, se assim forem os desígnios políticos.
The Portuguese Air Force (Prt AF) will soon be facing a new reality that arises from the capabilities that characterize the new fleet of aircraft that will arrive to the Country in 2023 to replace the C-130H. The choice befell on the new KC-390, manufactured by Embraer. One of the novelties that the KC-390 will bring to the Air Force is the Air to Air Refuelling capability (AAR). AAR being a novelty in the Prt AF, this study aims to investigate its operationalisation both in the national and international scopes. From the internal point of view, it is essential to understand if the characteristics of the KC-390 are compatible with the existing fleets with AAR capability and the operational advantages that may arise. Internationally, it is important to realise how Portugal will be able to use a refuelling aircraft in multinational initiatives. Through a methodology characterized by inductive reasoning, based on a qualitative research strategy and a cross-sectional research design, it can be concluded that AAR may be feasible at the national level, considering its compatibility with several Prt AF aircraft. Internationally, and due to the lack of refuelling platforms, the initiatives provided by the AAR capacity where Portugal can be a part of are numerous, depending on the political will.
