Abstract(s)
The aging population is known to be one of the main challenges of the 21st century. Alongside the transformations in family structure and the loss of some functions traditionally fulfilled by the family, the elderly have become one of the most vulnerable groups in our society. Due to these changes within families, it is increasingly important to provide responses that meet the needs felt by the elderly and, above all, that promote active aging, contributing to the maintenance of their independence and autonomy. This work explores concepts such as "Ageing in Place," "Coliving," and "Cohousing" associated with a modern residential alternative, considering new forms of social interaction and the social benefits that this housing option brings. Using a qualitative methodology, a senior coliving experience in the northern region of Portugal was investigated as an innovative project. To characterize this initiative, interviews were conducted with the professionals involved in the project as well as with the residents of the shared houses. Although this initiative was created and managed by external social organizations and developed by public entities, it represents a viable alternative for residential solutions for autonomous elderly individuals. Additionally, it aims to promote aging at home and within the community, as well as to address issues such as loneliness and social isolation, which are so characteristic of this social group.
