Abstract(s)
Fátima, undoubtably, is the center of pilgrimage tourism in Portugal. Religion plays a pivotal role both socially and culturally, in Portugal, defining the culture and society we are living in. Throughout the last century, thousands of pilgrims have walked these paths with faith and devotion, paying and making promises to Virgin Mary, as others go there with many other purposes and different intentions. In this dissertation this pilgrimage phenomenon will be studied as well as religion, devotion to Fátima and its frequency all year long. Through a questionnaire, specifically scripted for this study, one has been able to describe pilgrims demographically, divided them into clusters according to their religious habits and their beliefs. With this study one has been able to identify if Fátima is a center of true devotion or if there is also a portion of visitors who go there as tourists bringing their devotion and religion afterwards into their trip.
