dc.description.abstractA presente investigação tem como objetivo de estudo o Best Management Practices (BMP) West Africa (WA) numa perspetiva de evolução dos incidentes de pirataria marítima/Assalto Armado no Mar (AAM). O estudo aborda a eventual relação entre este documento e a ocorrência deste tipo de incidentes com navios mercantes, na Voluntary Reporting Area (VRA) do Golfo da Guiné (GdG), entre janeiro de 2016 e outubro de 2020. Procura-se verificar, de forma concreta, se a publicação do BMP WA provocou uma diminuição per si do número de incidentes de pirataria marítima/AAM, bem como da taxa de sucesso dos ataques pirata. A investigação baseia-se num raciocínio indutivo. Foi adotada uma estratégia de investigação mista, pretendendo-se complementar a análise documental e observação estruturada (não participante) com a visão de Capitães de navios mercantes, registadas através de entrevistas semiestruturadas. Concluiu-se que o BMP WA não contribui para a diminuição do número de incidentes de pirataria marítima/AAM no GdG, assim como não é possível relacionar este documento com a elevada taxa de sucesso de ataques pirata registada em 2020. Abstract: This research objective is to study the Best Management Practices (BMP) West Africa (WA) from the perspective of maritime piracy/armed assault at sea incidents evolution. It addresses the possible relation between BMP WA and this type of incidents with merchant ships in the Voluntary Reporting Area (VRA) of the Gulf of Guinea (GoG), from january 2016 to october 2020. This study aims to verify in a concrete way whether the publication of the BMP WA has led to a decrease per se both in the number of maritime piracy/armed assault at sea incidents, and in the success rate of pirate attacks. The research is based on a inductive method. A mixed research strategy has been adopted, in order to complement bibliographic analysis and structured (non-participating) observation with the vision of merchant ships Captains, registered through semi-structured interviews. It has been concluded that the BMP WA does not contribute to a decrease in the maritime piracy/armed assault at sea number of incidents in the GoG, nor is it possible to relate this document to the high success rate of pirate attacks in 2020.pt_PT
