- Healthy ageing education across Europe: a survey of ENPHE membersPublication . Alves Lopes, António; Almeida, Patrícia; Maurice, N; Le Goff, L; Pillu, M; Vilaró-Casamitjana, J; Slachtová, MBackground and Purpose Healthy ageing is an optimal status that people could achieve when they currently adapt their physical and psychological evolution that allow them to participate socially with a high level of autonomy. The process of becoming older is a personal process that can be very heterogeneous. This heterogeneity generates different approaches depending on the needs, capacities of adaptation and subject possibilities. Therefore, it is important that any kind of intervention should adapt specifically to each patient. Description With the goal to develop and offer updated education in Healthy Ageing, a group of five universities: Ecole d’Assas (France), Blanquerna-Universitat Ramón Lull (Spain), Univerzita Palackého v Olomouci (Czech Republic), Kolegji Heimerer (Kosovo) and Escola de Saúde do Alcoitão (Portugal) decided to set up a joint adventure as encouraged by ENPHE. Our first step is to benchmark and characterise within Europe the tendencies, the offers and models of best practices. Material / Methods An online questionnaire was developed and sent to all the ENPHE members between January and February of 2017. The survey was composed of twenty close and open questions related to the participant identification, course description and identification of institutional projects in healthy ageing Summary of Results From a population of 136 EMPHE member's we receive 39 complete responses (27%) and the main results are: 69% of the respondents offer courses about healthy ageing; 88% Integrated in the bachelor degree ; mainly for Physiotherapists students (92%); and with the most prevalent topics (above 80%) - Assessment and intervention of clients/populations, multidisciplinary issues and Prevention; the main pedagogical approaches used are lectures (88%), clinical training/field work (77%) and casebased learning (74%); being written or oral examination (81%) the main assessment strategies used. Importance It is very important to empower the individual to become autonomous in deciding how to manage their own ageing process in a healthy way. Any curricula should take in account this reality in order to transform the role of health care professionals and provide them competences to support individuals in this process.
- Peer-mentoring in physiotherapy education: comparation of 3 approachesPublication . Alves Lopes, António; Santos, HugoPurpose The aim of this study was to compare 3 different approaches to Peer-Mentoring in relation to the perception of the students how Peer-Mentoring could promote the development of Physiotherapy clinical skills in undergraduate Physiotherapy students. Subjects This Peer-Mentoring was developed among students of the 2nd and 3rd years of undergraduate Physiotherapy course during the academic year of 2016-2017. Material / Methods During one semester, the students of the second year were organised in small groups and were allocated to them a group of mentors of the third year. Each mentor had a specific area (Cardiorespiratory, Neuromuscular and musculoskeletal) and a specific mentoring style. Orientation support was given at least 3 times during this process. All the groups registered all the activities carried out in the meetings. An online questionnaire was developed and used to identify the participants perceptions about the outcomes and satisfaction the mentoring process. Results The main results of the questionnaire showed great satisfaction with the mentoring process in all the groups. The students refer to the importance that the tutor had in consolidating theoretical knowledge, clinical reasoning and practical skills. All the groups expressed that the process was very rewarding and are eager to repeat this experience. Regarding the comparison between mentoring styles, students preferred mentoring with more directed than free styles. Conclusions Mentoring promotion facilitates learning opportunities for 2nd graders in the topics covered and can also increase the leadership and teaching skills of 3rd graders, both outcomes have the potential to benefit elements outside this process, including future work or patients. In relation to the process of Peer-Mentoring a good organisation and objectives/tasks well established by the responsible teacher and tutor seems to be fundamental to the overall success. Educational / Clinical relevance The promotion of peer-mentoring could facilitate peer-to-peer learning opportunities for students, and promote leadership and teaching skills.
- More than JUST education: cultural diversity & expertise one goalPublication . Alves Lopes, António; Almeida, Patrícia; Nazzal, MohammadThe European Comission and related projects like capacity building program aim to achieve a homogeneous high level of education among european countries and overboarders partners. The main goal is to create high level of professional fields and offer to allow and stimulate easy mobility. Of special interest are the collaborations among countries with diferent cultural backgrounds and diferent services systems. On the field of health care and rehabilitation are visible the diferences of services and respective education. These diferences are mainly related with maturity and innovation of the services, health care needs of specific populations and hierarquy and models of functioning of the specific societies. Goal – to describe the development of a Master in Rehabilitation for the Jordan University of Science and Technology – JUST in a capacity building Project with Portugal. England, Turkey and Jordan. Besides the regular challenges of setting up a new curricula and related pedagogical model, this projects faced a special cultural challenge by having together partners from very different geographic locations, cultural background and educational models. The combination of the pragmatic and goal oriented posture of the Jordans, the hardworking attitude of the Turkish, the quality organization of the English and the flexible and nurturing attitude of the Portuguese, together with the common posture of intercultural respect and willingness to be successful, was the recipe to evolve from chaos to organisation. The level of expertise in different scientific fields and in education design were also determinat characteristics of the patnernship that conducted to a innovative product designed to respond to the Jordan needs of graduated programs and high leveled professionals in rehabilitation. At the end, we achieved successfully a common understanding of curricular development and design with the product of a curricular structure (to be presented on a table), a blended learning model and an educational team, for a Master in Rehabilitation of 120 ECTS, approved by the Jordan accreditation system, that permits the start of the program in September of 2017.
- E essa é a minha opinião: para o estudo da emergência da escrita argumentativaPublication . Costa, Ana Luísa; Cerqueira, Sónia; Carreto, VanessaIn this article, we present an empirical study on early argumentative writing, in opinion texts written by children of the 2nd and 4th grade (1st cycle of basic education). The analysis of discourse and linguistic properties shows early skills in written argumentation. These results call into question the Portuguese teaching guidelines, which only begin providing for the writing of opinion texts in the 5th grade. This study also brings to light the conclusions of similar studies (Brassart, 1990, Leal & Morais, 2006) and contributes to the characterization of writing development and linguistic awareness in the initial school years.
