- Has covid-19 turned remote work into a differentiating retention factor?Publication . Santos, Maria Helena Morais dos; Sousa, Inês Carneiro eRemote Work (RW) is not new. Although, as of March 2020, due to the pandemic’s first lockdown, this practice, until then implemented by a few organizations, was massively and obligatorily adopted. Nevertheless, two years passed and divergent opinions about RW remain. Inspired by the American concept of the ‘Great Resignation’, this study was focused on employees’ perspectives about RW: how was the experience; how is the situation nowadays; how they perceive their levels of performance during RW and, above all, understand if RW became such an important retention factor that, some of these employees, might consider leaving their current companies in a search for a better RW reality. Results show that RW is nowadays indeed a differentiating retention factor and the majority of the participants wish to have it in a hybrid model. This study was able to understand the evolution of RW perception from the first lockdown until current days, their challenges and also their gains with the RW situation. The biggest challenge referred to was the lack of social contact. On the opposite side, quality of life was the biggest gain. This exploratory study contributes to a broader understanding of RW nowadays among the labour force, to the improvement of a work arrangement design for the present and the future, in a time where the employment rate is low, employees see work with different eyes and the lack of talents are at the top of companies’ agenda.
