- Tooth wear prevalence and risk factors among patients from clínica dentária Egas Moniz : an updatePublication . Rodrigues, Sofia Martins Palma; Vieira, Ana Maria; Carvalho, RuiAim: This study aims to update the prevalence of tooth wear in a sample of patients seeking the Triage and Urgency appointment at Egas Moniz Dental Clinic (EMDC), correlate with risk factors and compare with the results obtained with the previous index used in the EMDC. Material and methods: The database created with the collected information was used for descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Data from 2266 patients, between 2021 and 2023, was analysed, as well as the presence of tooth wear, its different types and its correlation with risk factors. Results: The prevalence of dental wear was found to be 72.1%, with attrition (35.8%) being the most prevalent lesion, and erosion (7.2%) the least prevalent, in line with the previous investigation. Involving erosion lesions, the ones involving only enamel had a prevalence of 4.8%. Concerning risk predictors, age (OR = 1.013) and VDO (OR = 1.575) were considered relevant for abrasion. Age (OR = 1.028), gender, specifically male, (OR = 1.303) and the use of drugs (OR = 1.736) were positively associated with the presence of attrition. Regarding erosion, age (OR = 1.017), VDO (OR = 1.527), dry mouth (OR = 1.538) and the intake of antacids (OR = 3.128) were considered risk factors for this condition. For NCCL only age (OR = 1.028) was significantly associated. Conclusion: It was concluded that TW is prevalent and increases with age, underscoring the necessity for timely and accurate diagnosis to minimise its progression. Additionally, it is crucial to conduct a thorough evaluation of the risk factors involved, to implement effective preventive measures and treatment strategies.
