- A high-statistics measurement of transverse spin effects in dihadron production from muon–proton semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scatteringPublication . COMPASS collaboration (221 authors); Bordalo, P.; Franco, C.; Nunes, A.S.; Quaresma, M.; Quintans, C.; Ramos, S.; Silva, L.; Stolarski, M.A measurement of the azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised proton (NH$_{3}$) targets are presented. They provide independent access to the transversity distribution functions through the measurement of the Collins asymmetry in single hadron production. The data were taken in the year $2010$ with the COMPASS spectrometer using a $160\,\mbox{GeV}/c$ muon beam of the CERN SPS, increasing by a factor of about three the available statistics of the previously published data taken in the year $2007$. The measured sizeable asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data. An approximate equality of the Collins asymmetry and the dihadron asymmetry is observed, suggesting a common physical mechanism in the underlying fragmentation.
- Analysis of the exclusive final state npe$^+$e$^-$ in quasi-free np reactionPublication . HADES collaboration (117 authors); Blanco, A.; Bordalo, P.; Fonte, P.; Franco, C.; Lopes, L.; Mangiarotti, A.; Ramos, S.; Silva, L.We report on the investigation of dielectron production in tagged quasi-free neutron-proton collisions by using a deuteron beam of kinetic energy 1.25GeV/u impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Our measurements with HADES confirm a significant excess of $e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs above the $\pi^{0}$ mass in the exclusive channel $dp \rightarrow npe^{+}e^{-}(p_{spect})$ as compared to the exclusive channel $ ppe^{+}e^{-}$ measured in proton-proton collisions at the same energy. That excess points to different bremsstrahlung production mechanisms. Two models were evaluated for the role of the charged pion exchange between nucleons and double- $\Delta$ excitation combined with intermediate $\rho$ -meson production. Differential cross sections as a function of the $e^{+}e^{-}$ invariant mass and of the angles of the virtual photon, proton and electrons provide valuable constraints and encourage further investigations on both experimental and theoretical sides.
- Centrality determination of Au + Au collisions at 1.23A GeV with HADESPublication . HADES collaboration (113 authors); Blanco, A.; Bordalo, P.; Fonte, P.; Franco, C.; Lopes, L.; Mangiarotti, A.; Ramos, S.; Silva, L.The centrality determination for Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV, as measured with HADES at the GSI-SIS18, is described. In order to extract collision geometry related quantities, such as the average impact parameter or number of participating nucleons, a Glauber Monte Carlo approach is employed. For the application of this model to collisions at this relatively low centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.42$ GeV special investigations were performed. As a result a well defined procedure to determine centrality classes for ongoing analyses of heavy-ion data is established.
- Control Systems: an Application to a High Energy Physics Experiment (COMPASS)Publication . Bordalo, P.; Nunes, A.S.; Pires, C.; Quintans, C.; Ramos, S.The Detector Control System (DCS) of the COMPASS experiment at CERN is presented. The experiment has a high level of complexity and flexibility and a long time of operation, that constitute a challenge for its full monitorisation and control. A strategy to use a limited number of standardised, cost-effective, industrial solutions of hardware and software was pursued. When such solutions were not available or could not be used, customised solutions were developed.
- D* and D Meson Production in Muon Nucleon Interactions at 160 GeV/cPublication . COMPASS collaboration (221 authors); Bordalo, P.; Franco, C.; Nunes, A.S.; Quaresma, M.; Quintans, C.; Ramos, S.; Silva, L.; Stolarski, M.The production of D* and D mesons in inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off a ^6LiD target has been investigated with the COMPASS spectrometer at CERN for 0.003 (GeV/c)^2 < Q^2 < 10 (GeV/c)^2 and 3x10^-5< x_Bj < 0.1. The study is based on 8100 events where a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected subsequently to a D*+ or D*- decay, and on 34000 events, where only a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected. Kinematic distributions of D*, D and K*_2 are given as a function of their energy E, transverse momentum p_T, energy fraction z, and of the virtual photon variables nu, Q^2 and x_Bj. Semi-inclusive differential D* production cross-sections are compared with theoretical predictions for D* production via photon-gluon fusion into open charm. The total observed production cross-section for D*+/- mesons with laboratory energies between 22 and 86 GeV is 1.9 nb. Significant cross-section asymmetries are observed between D*+ and D*- production for nu<40 GeV and z>0.6.
- Deep sub-threshold $\phi$ production in Au+Au collisionsPublication . HADES collaboration (114 authors); Blanco, A.; Bordalo, P.; Fonte, P.; Franco, C.; Lopes, L.; Mangiarotti, A.; Ramos, S.; Silva, L.We present data on charged kaons (K+-) and {\phi} mesons in Au(1.23A GeV)+Au collisions. It is the first simultaneous measurement of K and {\phi} mesons in central heavy-ion collisions below a kinetic beam energy of 10A GeV. The {\phi}/K- multiplicity ratio is found to be surprisingly high with a value of 0.52 +- 0.16 and shows no dependence on the centrality of the collision. Consequently, the different slopes of the K+ and K- transverse-mass spectra can be explained solely by feed- down, which substantially softens the spectra of K- mesons. Hence, in contrast to the commonly adapted argumentation in literature, the different slopes do not necessarily imply diverging freeze- out temperatures of K+ and K- mesons caused by different couplings to baryons.
- $\Delta$(1232) Dalitz decay in proton-proton collisions at T=1.25 GeV measured with HADES at GSIPublication . HADES collaboration (119 authors); Blanco, A.; Bordalo, P.; Fonte, P.; Franco, C.; Lopes, L.; Mangiarotti, A.; Ramos, S.; Silva, L.We report on the investigation of Δ(1232) production and decay in proton-proton collisions at a kinetic energy of 1.25 GeV measured with HADES. Exclusive dilepton decay channels ppe+e− and ppe+e−γ have been studied and compared with the partial-wave analysis of the hadronic ppπ0 channel. They allow to access both Δ+→pπ0(e+e−γ) and Δ+→pe+e− Dalitz decay channels. The perfect reconstruction of the well-known π0 Dalitz decay serves as a proof of the consistency of the analysis. The Δ Dalitz decay is identified for the first time and the sensitivity to N-Δ transition form factors is tested. The Δ(1232) Dalitz decay branching ratio is also determined for the first time; our result is (4.19 ± 0.62 syst. ± 0.34 stat.) ×10−5, albeit with some model dependence.
- Exclusive $\omega$ meson muoproduction on transversely polarised protonsPublication . COMPASS collaboration (228 authors); Bordalo, P.; Franco, C.; Nunes, A.S.; Quaresma, M.; Quintans, C.; Ramos, S.; Silva, L.; Stolarski, M.Exclusive production of ω mesons was studied at the COMPASS experiment by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal asymmetries were measured in the range of photon virtuality 1 (GeV/c)2
- Exclusive rho^0 muoproduction on transversely polarised protons and deuteronsPublication . COMPASS collaboration (221 authors); Bordalo, P.; Franco, C.; Nunes, A.S.; Quaresma, M.; Quintans, C.; Ramos, S.; Silva, L.; Stolarski, M.The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A_UT in hard exclusive production of rho^0 mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E^q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q^2, x_B and p_t^2 dependence of A_UT is presented in a wide kinematic range. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E^u and E^d approximately cancel.
