- Anxiety and public space: An AI-driven approach to exploring interior design variables for mental health improvementPublication . Nyzhnikova, Mariya; Ayanoglu, HandePublic spaces can influence mental well-being, particularly for individuals with anxiety disorders such as social anxiety. The thesis investigates which interior design variables in interior public spaces most significantly trigger anxiety. The objective is to identify impactful environmental factors and explore how AI can help in this process by generating images of environments to test these effects. A mixed-methods approach was used, including literature review, interviews, surveys, and AI-generated spatial simulations. Findings suggest that crowdedness and sound ambience have the most significant influence on anxiety in public environments. The research aims to draw attention to the importance of designing emotion-aware public spaces by highlighting which variables affect individuals with anxiety. Through the use of AI-generated simulations and user feedback, the study aims to provide interdisciplinary insights that combine design, mental health, and emerging technologies. The aim is to promote inclusive design practices that prioritize mental well-being in public spaces.
