- Evaluation of the Intraoperative Cardiorespiratory Effect After the Administration of Maropitant as Premedication in Canine and Feline SurgeryPublication . Morais, Gabriela Carvalho; Fontes, Sónia Alexandra de JesusMaropitant is a selective Neurokinin-1 receptor antagonist, blocking substance P to connect with its receptor. It is approved as a potent anti-emetic drug, being used in surgical premedication to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by opioids and new findings conclude its adjuvant analgesic efficacy for visceral pain. The aim of this study is to verify or reject this hypothesis through cardiorespiratory monitoring of 139 animals (dogs and cats) during surgical procedures, such as ovariohysterectomy (with or without pyometra), ovariectomy, cystotomy, splenectomy, fracture resolution and orchiectomy. Premedication and anaesthesia protocols were adjusted to every animal considering their needs and the animals were randomly divided into two groups: the group that received 1 mg/kg of Maropitant with their premedication and the control group that did not. The parameters monitored during the surgery were heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, end-tidal carbon dioxide, blood pressure: systolic, diastolic and mean artery pressure and temperature. From the results we conclude that Maropitant improves oxygen saturation and lowers heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure, but no significant effect for pain management.
